New York City Professional Matchmaker

What is a matchmaker? As we look back, In several cultures of the past, (and even today) the title of "matchmaker" has become quite professionalized. In the past, the matchmaker was considered to be an essential family advisor in seeking the right spouse since they possessed a good working relationship with families and friends. In other cultures of the past, where marriages were arranged, the astrologer often claimed that astrology sanctioned and determined successful relationships or marriages.

Social Dance functions, especially in frontier North America, for example the contra dance or square dance, has also been employed in matchmaking, usually on an informal basis. In the past, when farming families were widely separated and most children on the farm was working, marriage-age children could only meet in church or in such mandated social events. Matchmakers were acting as formal chaperones or as self-employed matchmaking professionals  serving a clear social purpose. Matchmakers would attend such events and advise families of any burgeoning romances before they went too far if it was perceived not to be a good family match.

The influence of matchmakers in that type of culture did not arrange marriages for love. The bigger influence of North America relationships  (e.g. "being able to support a family", "good prospects") played a larger role in determining if a male suitor was acceptable, to the family in question. It may be fair to say that the matchmaker was only able to speed up, or slow down, relationships that were already forming, based on income and/or position in society. In this sense the matchmaker was not distinguishable from relatives, rivals, or others. The clergy also played a key role in matchmaking in most Western cultures, as they continue to do so in modern times. Matchmaking was certainly one of the peripheral functions of the village priest and in medieval times of society.

Matchmakers trade on the belief that romantic love is something akin to a human right. In today's society with modern internet dating services, which  is just one of many examples of a dating system where technology has invoked an attempt of magic charm with the hope to bring happiness to its participants. These services often rely on personality tests trying to automate the true function of a matchmaker, however statistics prove most people who join such services tend to lie or embellish their personality traits or possessions, therefore failing such a computerized system before it begins.

The acceptance of internet dating systems however, has created something of a resurgence in the role of the traditional professional matchmaker. Those who find dating systems or internet dating services a failure, prefer human intelligence and personal touches which can hand select a more compatible dating prospect. In any case, the fact remains that matchmakers offer a more realistic approach for long term relationships since matching is done personally. Matchmakers can authenticate prospects in ways that internet dating sites or personal dating web sites simply can not! A professional matchmaker saves clients time, money and possibly several bad experiences.
